Exhibition Description & Curatorial Statement

Hummingbirds and goldfish can evidently see colors off the ultraviolet end of the spectrum that we cant. It’s hard to imagine what Philip Guston would have done with a few more degrees of light frequency to play with. Underlying his mythic imagery and heightened sense of primordial time, beyond his movement between figuration and abstraction, there is a general optimism in his work and a desire to like the world and discover little pleasures in the unfamiliar and sometimes darker recesses of reality. With the low brow spirit of a drunken Kung Fu guru, Guston’s post 60’s universe is a talent show of mastery then obliteration of formal painterly concerns. In a compositional style that Martin Hentschel once described as a non-hierarchical order configuration processes, Guston learned to navigate the difficult science of color by objectifying the paint. As an artist who was made famous for work that was stubbornly eccentric to the contemporary enthusiasms and passing fashions of his day, his style and unique voice has proven to have some serious lasting power. But it was over forty years ago that Guston’s work revolutionized the art world. If legacy is built on the influence of future generations what sort of influence has Guston’s work had on the imagination of today’s studio artist? What has Philip Guston done for you lately? To answer this question Republic Worldwide presents “Heathen Fundamentalist”, a juried exhibition of ten uniquely talented emerging artists and heirs to Philip Guston's unique creative process.
